Where Downspouts Should Discharge In Kansas City
Water should leave the foundation, not sit against it. Kansas City sits on expansive clay soils that swell when saturated and shrink when they dry, which creates hydrostatic pressure against basement walls and is a leading cause of foundation movement and seepage in this metro. Discharge should carry water at least six to ten feet from the house, downhill, and never toward a neighboring foundation or a window well.
One local rule matters here: under City of Kansas City Ordinance No. 150452, downspouts, sump pumps and other drainage mechanisms cannot be directly connected to the city's sanitary sewer system.
